WS-GF-W33-002

When you play Akane Sakura, Today’s Role, you choose another yellow character you control and give it +1000 power until end of turn. Also when played, you may pay 1 stock and put the top card of your deck into clock to search your deck for up to 1 level 1 or lower yellow character.

WS-GF-W33-006

When Akari Amari, Zombie Hunter is a “stock” reverser. (When it is reversed by a character that is level 0 or lower, you may send that character to stock and then put the bottom card of your opponent’s stock into the waiting room) You may pay 1 stock to give a yellow character you control +1500 power until end of turn.

WS-GF-W33-007

Yuzu Hazuki, White Shirt + Apron gives your other character in the middle slot of your center stage +1000 power. You may pay 1 stock and rest two characters you control to Brainstorm: for each CX revealed, you search your deck for up to 1 yellow character and then shuffle your deck. (If you don’t reveal any CXs, you will not shuffle your deck.)

WS-GF-W33-013

Akane Sakurai, Sea Bath gives characters you control in front of it +500 power. When you play a CX, you may rest 2 standing characters you control. If you do, choose a yellow character you control and it gets +1 soul until end of turn.

WS-GF-W33-016

When you play Shinobu Kokonoe in Long-Sleeved Kimono, you reveal the top card of your deck. If the revealed card isn’t a yellow character, Shinobu can’t attack for the turn.

WS-GF-W33-027

When Remi Tamai, Sports Festival attacks, you choose a character you control and it gets +500 power until end of turn. (It can target itself.) When damage dealt by this is canceled, you may pay 1 stock. If you do, you draw a card.

At level 1, we have 10 cards.

WS-GF-W33-003

Remi Tamai, Silence Alongside You has a CX combo with “Free Research”: when it attacks, if all characters you control are yellow, you may pay 1 stock. If you do, it gets +4000 power and “When this reverses a character in battle, tutor (search deck & reveal) for a yellow character and then shuffle your deck” until end of turn.

WS-GF-W33-018

Akari Amari, Corpse Party has clock encore. You may rest 2 [Girl] characters you control to give it +2500 power until end of turn.

WS-GF-W33-033

Akari Amari, Splatter Doll gives all other yellow characters you control +500 power. You may pay 1 stock and rest it to give a character you control +2500 power until end of turn. (It can target itself.)

At level 2, we have 8 cards: 6 characters and 2 events.

WS-GF-W33-004

When you play Kinoko Himejima, Eyes of Mushrooms Also Have Years, if you control 3 or more other yellow characters and have 5 or fewer cards in your deck, you shuffle your waiting room into your deck. When you do, you choose a character you control and it gets +2000 power and a Burn trigger until end of turn. (Once per turn, when damage dealt by that character is canceled, you may deal 1 damage to your opponent.)

WS-GF-W33-021

Remi Tamai, Making Sweets has a +2500 power 1 stock Backup ability. When you use the Backup ability, you may pay 2 stock and put a character you control in your waiting room. If you do, choose a character your opponent controls with a level higher than your opponent and put it into stock. (If you use the ability on a character that has just attacked, that attack will not deal damage.)

WS-GF-W33-022

Remi Tamai, Chinese Dress gives all other yellow characters you control +2000 power during your turn. You may pay 2 stock and rest this to tutor (search, reveal & put into hand) up to 1 yellow character.

WS-GF-W33-041

During your turn, Yuzu Hazuki, Creative Class gets +3000 power and +2 soul if the character across from it is level 3 or higher. (+2 soul!!)

WS-GF-W33-045

Test of Courage is an event with counter step timing that gives a character you control +X power until end of turn, where X is 1000 times the number of yellow characters you control.

WS-GF-W33-024

When you play Akane Sakurai, Sunset Cool, it gets +1500 power until end of turn. At the start of your encore step, if rested, you may pay 2 stock to Change into an “Akane Sakurai, Her True Self” from your waiting room. (If  reversed at the start of your encore step, you will miss the timing for the Change ability)

At level 3, we have 8 characters.

WS-GF-W33-005

Koruri Tokitani, Seeking Models gets a punish burn ability until end of turn when you play it from your hand. (Once per turn, if damage dealt by it is canceled, you put the top card of your deck into your waiting room then deal X+1 damage to your opponent where X is that card’s level. CXs are considered level 0.) When it reverses a character, you may send that character to memory.

WS-GF-W33-001

Akane Sakurai, Her True Self has a Heal ability when played or placed via Change effect. It has a CX combo with “Heated Live Commentary”: when it attacks, it gets +3000 power and a burn trigger until end of turn.

WS-GF-W33-012

Remi Tamai, Butt Back Against the Wall gets -1 level in hand if you control 4 or more yellow characters. When it attacks, choose a character you control and it gets +4000 power until end of turn. When it is reversed in battle, send it to memory.

The CX spread is a 4/4 split between 1k1 + Bounce and 1 stock 1 soul +2 soul effects. (The stock comes from a yellow character in your waiting room.)

How do we use this deck?

Girl Friend Beta is very centered around maximizing the rewards for having a single color deck. Though it is possible to have a deck with more than one color, after adding the second, the returns tend to diminish.

This list uses some of the most unfair effects that the set has access to, and focuses on using yellow only to ensure that these effects are used to their maximum potential.

At level 0, the main objective is very similar to any deck; setup for level 1. There is a full set of Akane Sakurai, Today’s Role to fetch as many Remi Tamai, Silence Alongside You from the deck. At level 1, the CX combo with Remi Tamai opens up the whole deck. Even though it requires you to reverse a character, 9000 power is rather difficult to match at (and nearly impossible before) level 1.

In case the deck isn’t able to get the combo off early on, it can still maintain damage at level 1 with Akari Amari, Corpse party and use its power to reverse opposing characters. The extra support in Akari Amari, Splatter Doll is there to edge the characters just slightly higher in power, but also to give a greater chance of the level 0 Akane providing card advantage.

Level 2 is an interesting place for the deck to be. Ideally, it will want to keep as many cards from its level 1 as possible on the board and search for as many cards for its level 3 as possible. The CX combo with Remi Tamai is actually still viable to use as a very greedy way to eliminate an opposing level 2 character (though not highly recommended). Test of Courage should be held onto as much as possible for level 3, unless the opponent is severely behind on either cards in hand or damage.

Kinoko Himejima, Eyes of Mushrooms Also Have Years has a ‘free refresh’ effect that requires you to have a committed board, so be careful when using it; spending too many cards in hand that will only be reversed on the opponent’s next turn (or worse, your own) can cause the ability to backfire.

There is some utility to deal with ‘overlevel’ characters both on the defense and offense. Most interesting to note is that Yuzu Hazuki, Creative Class, will have 3 soul when facing a level 3+ character, which is unlike most other “level slayer” characters. (Typically, the character with an effect similar to it would get +3000 power and +1 soul)

If the game is really going your way, Remi Tamai, Back Against the Wall can make an early appearance to further help you KO opposing characters. There is a fair bit of risk in using it early if you are even with your opponent, but it is just another way that the deck can gain or secure an advantage at level 2.

The deck’s level 3 features the familiar “Musashi” punish burn ability with Koruri Tokitaki, with the added bonus of kicking reversed characters into memory. Akane Sakurai, Her True Self can Heal but also Burn with its CX combo. Barring some sort of anti-Burn ability, the deck should not have a very difficult time dealing 7 or more damage at level 3.

What does the deck not do well? Is it missing anything?

There is a potential alternate list for this deck that uses a second color, red, for a level 3 CX combo:

Alternate List (Y/r)

Level 0 – 16

4 Akane Sakurai, Today’s Role (GF/W33-002)
3 Akari Amari, Zombie Hunter (GF/W33-006)
2 Yuzu Hazuki, White Shirt + Apron (GF/W33-007)
3 Akane Sakurai, Sea Bath (GF/W33-013)
3 Shinobu Kokonoe in Long-Sleeved Kimono (GF/W33-016)
1 Remi Tamai, Sports Festival (GF/W33-027)

Level 1 – 10

4 Remi Tamai, Silence Alongside You (GF/W33-003)
4 Akari Amari, Corpse Party (GF/W33-018)
2 Akari Amari, Splatter Doll (GF/W33-033)

Level 2 – 8

2 Kinoko Himejima, Eyes of Mushrooms Also Have Years (GF/W33-004)
1 Remi Tamai, Making Sweets (GF/W33-021)
2 Remi Tamai, Chinese Dress (GF/W33-022)
1 Yuzu Hazuki, Creative Class (GF/W33-041)
2 Test of Courage (GF/W33-045)

Level 3 – 8

4 Koruri Tokitani, Seeking Models (GF/W33-005)
4 Chloe Lemaire, Regular Brilliance (GF/W33-052)

CX – 8

4 Free Research (GF/W33-047)
4 Chihaya Something (GF/W33-109)

WS-GF-W33-052

You may Heal when you play Chloe Lemaire, Regular Brilliance. It has a CX combo with “Chihaya Something”: when it reverses a character in battle, you may pay 2 stock. If you do, deal X damage to your opponent where X is the number of CXs in your waiting room. (The CX in your CX zone will not count for this card’s effect.)

Both decks actually have very few ways of using Brainstorm abilities, which can be concerning to some players. Early CX floods can be inconvenient, but at the very least, if the deck is flooded early on, it can try to thin out the deck by attacking and using the Remi CX combo.

The first list does not even venture into the possibility of supporting a second color, which increases consistency at the potential cost of overall power. The deck does not have very many ways of dealing with cards that have encore abilities until the very very late game, so the early game against other decks that need to reverse characters (Kantai) or that use clock encore (Nisekoi) can just look like complete slugfests, or a race to see whose deck “goes off” first.

Both lists could also potentially make use of Koruri Tokitani, White Day (a level 2 stock reverser) that has a CX combo with “Clothing Princess”: when the CX is played, if this is on your center stage, tutor for up to 1 yellow character. If a list was to use this card, it would be perfectly viable on its own, but to maximize the synergy, something like a 3/3/2 split among CXs is advised.

WS-GF-W33-023

In Koruri’s absence, those that opt to have more power at level 2 without a CX combo commitment and less stock can also use Kinoko, Himejima, Welcoming New Student, which gets +1000 power during your turn for each other yellow character you control. This is a potential swap for the Remi Tamai, Back Against the Wall.

WS-GF-W33-040

For those that enjoy winning harder at level 1, Raimu Nejikawa, Director on Site is a great untargetable inclusion. It gets +1000 power during your turn for each other yellow character you control, and sends characters it reverses to memory. It is a potential alternative to the clock encore Akari, or potentially as a 3/2 (or even 3/3 split) in the deck if one pares down the level 2.

WS-GF-W33-009

How does the deck stack up? Is it conservative or greedy? What’s its overall power level? Is it easy or difficult to use? What would you say about its viability in the JP/EN metagames at large?

Greed: 2

The deck is one color, and will never run into color issues because every single card in the deck is literally the same color. There are a lot of 1 and 2-ofs in the deck, but these are generally accessible because of the maxed out numbers of Akane Sakurai, Today’s Role and Remi Tamai, Silence Alongside You.

Difficulty: 5

The deck is mercifully simple to use until level 1, because the objective is only to get as many copies of Remi into hand as possible to go off with the CX combo. At level 1, the question of what to actually get with Remi is fairly contextual and a skill test in itself. The deck’s level 2 is the most nebulous because it either involves preserving the board or setting up for level 3, but will usually involve some combination of both. Level 2 can also tempt some players to commit too many resources to the board, which can be precarious if the opponent is right at the brink of entering level 3. The deck does not have many ways to kill an opponent outright at level 2, and wants at least 4 stock at level 3 to be able to end the game. (6 is most ideal)

Power Range: 6 – 8

The deck presents an interesting Morton’s fork to the opponent at level 1: either play out characters and build stock that will potentially be used as ways to enable the Remi CX combo, or simply trade off the whole board at level 0 and let the clock encore Akari deal lots of potentially free damage. The deck can still play well regardless of the decision the opponent makes, and has a lot of Burn in the endgame to make sure recovery is as difficult as possible.

EN/JP Meta Viability:

With the ban list update in late 2014 hitting both Nisekoi and Kantai, GF Beta here finds itself almost alongside Little Busters! as a point of comparison for determining viability. Both have fairly similar level 0 and 1 plans, but the deck’s level 2 and 3 can simply overpower many decks with big characters. If there are a lot of decks in one’s meta that make liberal use of clock encore characters (most commonly seen in Nisekoi, Love Live!, Kantai and GF Beta), this deck won’t necessarily have a walk in the park. However, it is one of the few decks that can attack favorably turn after turn to gain advantage in both cards in hand and characters reversed.

Good luck!
